Happy New Year Gangjeong

I made this film with my full heart, so I really hope people can enjoy this film.

In the beginning, I just plan to write the letters to some people who I met in conflict situation but I really dissatisfied on the action I've done and I felt hard about the difficulty of communication in a foreign country. Although I've already tried hard to learn the local language, it's simply not easy.

After I decided to write a letter, I face another difficulty that I don't remember some people's faces, or I remember the faces but I don't know their names. Even though like this, I still wrote the letters, but I felt not so satisfied on my writing.

Finally, I decided to try to make this film with my photos and my drawings. The images may help me to say something which I couldn't express well.

"What are you doing here?" "This is not your country!" "We just need silence. Don't bother us."

I hope the person who said this to me in English can understand me a little bit more.

That is what I want to say for this film. Please watch and feel free to share.

等待 Waiting

關於你,在我記憶中的一角。
This is about you in my Memories.

你就是你,
You are the one who you are.

你託付你心,我成為你眼,默默看著自己。
You give me your heart and I become your eyes to look yourself silently,
而你好嗎?
And how are you?

啊,那聲音說著等待。
Hmmm...  the voice are saying waiting.

等著我們再次親自踏上你的搖籃,
Waiting for us to stand on the cradle who you are by our own,

然後我們終於都靜靜地睡去。
And then we all will finally have a serene sleep.

然後我們終於都明白這不是一場安靜的等候
And then we all finally realized this is not a tranquil wait.

Three steps one bowing down / 三步一拜

A Quaker Grandfather has been continually showing a piece of peace in his way every day around the gate.

He walks three steps and bowing down one time. He does it without shouting words and does it when chaos happens around him.

Thanks for being the one who you are here with us and with Gangjeong.
Thanks for your humble presence here.

Photo of Mass on Jan 3rd, 2012

The following photos were taken on Jan 3rd, 2012 when we had Mass in front of the gate.

It's terrible to see too many construction cars enter the gates continuously.

Actually, the Korea Government was reflected in the budget of new year of Jeju naval construction. Originally, 1327 billion was proposed, but 1281 billion had been cutted down. Thus, only 46 billion remain for the next year.

We are happy about this news. Although the naval base haven't been totally kicked out, it shows at least Korea government also recognizes how improper of this naval base plan is from the prosperous social movement against naval base. However, recently the navy construction companies are even crazier to speed up the construction as they want to spend all the remaining budget before the deadline or the remaining budget will also just be gone.

Many people have hard time in this issue but please don't just close your eyes and conscious heart to choose a shortcut. Even though among the peace activists, let's remember to reflect on ourselves too.

Please pray for total cancellation of naval base not just decreasing the budget, and pray that navy and construction company will recognize the immorality of this base plan. Pray for peace in our mind.-----------------------------------------------------

Mass in front of the naval base construction gate

Priests  sitting in front of the gate to help to stop the terrible construction cars to enter and go out from the gate so that the Mass can be continued

SungHee Oni tried hard to explain how improper of this naval base and how unfair the naval base plan is to the villagers. It's not new for pro-base and anti base, but anyway, she still tried.

So many police men were stand by beside us and the police car for arresting people were just parking beside the gate. The women police men were also standing by inside of the gate this time.

Sun Rise Festival on Dec 31th, 2011

Gangjeong port. Under the beautiful sky, there's terrible naval base fence blocking us to see the sea shore and beautiful volcanic rocks.

Gangjeong Port. The booth of festival was setting up in the port.
It looked like just a normal peaceful port, but this fishing port had been combined as part of so-called "beautiful tourism port for mix civilian-military use"(民軍複合觀光美港).

This fishing port in the photo become the "civilian use" as part of  "beautiful tourism port for mix civilian-military use" .

And the Absolute Conservative Area in Gangjeong where the living rock Gureombi is living became the "military use" as part of "beautiful tourism port for mix civilian-military use".

Do you want to know where the "military base" will be built up?

I am sorry that here I couldn't give you any photo of Gureombi on the Festival day as I couldn't enter it. I can only show you the photo before:

And are you ready to see the photo of this beautiful sea shore now? I will show you. The following photos were taken in a tower which we built up for watching Gureombi :

The Tiger Island is still sitting there but you couldn't see the Gureombi rock but a lot of cement here in the sea shore. Sorry about that.

Outside of the fence you can see the farming greenhouse. Inside the fence, it was once full of greenhouse.
Police men have to watch and stand by beside the fence as maybe they think Gangjeong people are dangerous. The fish men and farmers are dangerous. On the Festival day, the police men were more carefully patrolling near the port.

Let's see who these dangerous people look like!

The Gangjeong village leader.
Beautiful villagers sang and danced to open the festival.

In the night, the fortune teller predicted that the naval base will be gone and the Gangjeong will be better. I believe!
New Year of 2012 arrived. People are still determined to kick out the naval base.
